CURE - Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy It's Time We Found a CURE CURE Epilepsy Research

Since CURE’s inception in 1998, our events have served dual purposes: to bring awareness to epilepsy and raise needed funds for research toward finding a cure. Our success is due in large part to the efforts of our supporters who champion our cause. Take a look at our upcoming events!

Violet Femmes Relay Team
Ragnar Relay Race

Friday, September 12, 2014 - Saturday, September 13, 2014

Cumberland, MD to Washington, DC

One in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy during their lifetime. Ten years ago, my daughter, Virginia Cooper became one of them. Now that she’s 11, my husband Matt and I estimate that she's had more than 10,000 seizures, despite the medications she takes daily. Like Virginia, nearly half of the three million Americans with epilepsy do not have complete seizure control or only achieve seizure control at the cost of debilitating side effects from medications.

One of the ways I cope with the stress of raising a child with epilepsy is by running. I often run with friends, who often ask what they can do to help. So, I asked them to join my Ragnar team.

Ragnar is a relay race. Team members run, one at a time, day and night, each taking three turns, until the team has completed the 200-mile course. We will be running from Cumberland, Maryland, to Washington, DC, September 12-13.

We’re the Violet Femmes because purple is the color of epilepsy awareness and we’re an all-female team running to benefit CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy). Founded in 1998 by parents of epilepsy patients who were frustrated with available treatments, CURE is now the leading private funder of epilepsy research.

Joey’s Song 2014
A Madison Friends of CURE and Joey’s Song fundraiser

Sunday, September 7, 2014
6:00pm

Where : The Majestic Theatre,
115 King St., Madison WI
When : Doors at 6 PM, music starts at 7 PM

Tickets : $20 in advance, $23 at the door.

Our target is $56,000 raised at this year's concert. A typical research grant to help find a cure starts at $50,000. So we are trying every year to fund one research grant and work with our partners at Madison Friends of CURE to make that happen.

It will be a night of "one-offs". First, indie supergroup, The Know-It-All Boyfriends, featuring Butch Vig and Duke Erikson of Garbage, along with Freedy Johnston and thier musical cohorts will play a full night of rock-n-roll classics. Normally these guys just play private affairs, for friends and family, well consider yourselves their friends, because they are going to play for you !

The Big Sur Marathon
Alison vs Charlie

Sunday, April 27, 2014
6:45am

Big Sur California, Highway One

I had never heard of epilepsy or known anyone who had it until my first seizure. My entire life changed during my freshman year of college when I was struck by a grand mal seizure. All I remember is going to sleep the night before and then waking up in the hospital. In the years since that day, not a moment has passed that epilepsy has not affected my life. It has been a journey of ups and downs, good years and better years, as I continue to learn what it means to live with epilepsy.

There is one thing I've found to decrease seizures - running. From the day I incorporated running into my routine, my seizures have drastically declined. Charlie encouraged me to sign up for the Big Sur Marathon, which we are both running in April. We're having some fun and doing a fundraising challenge - see who can raise $500 first! Thanks for your support! :-)

The Hugh-a-thon will be 30 minutes long and a blast.

We will alternate swimming 50 yards (2 laps of the pool) and try to swim as many laps as possible. Every five 50 yards, we also will spin the wheel of fun – that 50 will be a fun stroke, like corkscrew or dolphin dives.

This will be the third Hugh-a-thon.
Our goal is to raise over $15,000 this year.

Faces of America 2014
A 110 mile bike ride

Friday, April 25, 2014 - Sunday, April 27, 2014

I am participating in Face of America 2014, a 110-mile, two-day bike ride (April 25-27) from the Pentagon to Gettysburg, PA.

The purpose of this ride is to support wounded veterans as they prove to themselves that even though they carry battle scars, any goal is achievable. I am riding to support veterans with physical, external wounds, but also those veterans who have wounds that can't be seen.

For this ride, I need to raise $750. If you are interested in supporting me on this ride, visit my donation page. The money raised allows disabled veterans to ride for free. Thank you for even a small donation - every little bit helps!

UMES School of Pharmacy 5K Strides for Epilepsy

Saturday, April 19, 2014

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Pharmacy’s Student Government Association is proud to announce the 2nd annual 5k Strides for Epilepsy 5K run. Our purpose for having this run/walk is to express our passion to advance research and get the community involved with our mission of raising awareness and research money for epilepsy.

The event will be held on April 19, 2014 at Salisbury Park here in Salisbury Maryland. We will be working hand in hand with other supporters of our cause, such as United Needs and Abilities. Last year we raised close to $3000.00, so our goal for this year is to surpass that mark. Give us a hand and help battle epilepsy!

RE: Epilepsy

Saturday, March 8, 2014

The Toadstool Pub
Highwood, Illinois

Our interest in raising funds for epilepsy research started with our daughter Maggie; but this really isn’t about her.  Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent, yet underfunded neurological disorders in the United States. Those living with epilepsy deal with varying degrees of significantly life altering symptoms every day.  Research has provided some patients and their families with effective medications, nutritional plans, and an enormous amount of hope.

Please join us on March 8, 2014 at The Toadstool Pub for silent and live auctions, live music, cocktails, and a lot of fun!

2013 Concert for Epilepsy

Tuesday, December 31, 2013
7:30pm

National Building Museum
Washington D.C.

The Concert for Epilepsy was created by Chad Barth in honor of his sister, Christina Ann Sauer, who was only three months old when her seizures began. For over 26 years, she’s dealt with an array of different doctors and tolerated numerous painful procedures. But throughout the ordeal, Christina has kept a big, bright smile on her face and sustained a unique love for music.

Since 2007, the Concert for Epilepsy has grown ten-fold. Through Chad’s passion and commitment more than $230,000 has been raised for epilepsy research and advocacy, helping not only Christina, but the 3 million Americans that are afflicted by epilepsy every day.

Running for Samson

Sunday, November 24, 2013

I am a physician, but even despite my medical training, I used to have this vague perception that epilepsy was a disease for which most people took a pill and did just fine. The truth is that epilepsy kills more every year than breast cancer. With its many insidious forms, epilepsy doesn't always kill but claims its victims in other ways. I know first-hand. My three-year-old son has Infantile Spasms, one of the disease's worst manifestations, and my six year old niece has had epilepsy half of her life.

I support CURE and ask that you do, too, by sponsoring me as I attempt my first half marathon race November 24.

I will be running for Sammy and for many other children as they fight for health and normalcy.

What Causes Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP)?
A Webinar

Thursday, September 12, 2013

Eastern: 3:00 PM
Central: 2:00 PM
Mountain: 1:00 PM
Pacific: 12:00 PM

What causes sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP)? Doctors have some ideas, but they don’t really know yet. There are several research studies trying to answer this question. Some studies are looking at the many possible causes of SUDEP by following people living with epilepsy as well as reviewing the records of those who have died. Others are measuring what happens to your heart and lungs during a seizure. The MORTEMUS study is examining cases of SUDEP that have occurred in people with uncontrolled epilepsy being evaluated in epilepsy monitoring units. The North American SUDEP Registry is gathering case information and tissue samples from individuals who have died of SUDEP. In addition, researchers are looking at the role autopsies can and should play in SUDEP research. Plenty of time will be left at the end of the webinar to answer your questions.

Eric Miller lost his wife, Carolina Barcelos Carneiro de Oliveira Miller, to Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) in August 2011.  She was only 25.  Since that most horrific tragedy, Eric has been working tirelessly to raise epilepsy awareness in her honor. Eric actively runs a very successful Facebook page and series of concerts with international touring artists that are streamed all over the world.  Eric’s recent idea is to turn Mount Kilimanjaro purple for epilepsy awareness.

Our interest in raising funds for epilepsy research started with our daughter Maggie; but ultimately this isn’t about her. We feel lucky enough to be one family who has found a medication that manages symptoms. Our goal, this first year, is to get as many people involved as possible and raise a modest amount of money for CURE. Please help us do this for the countless patients who are not as fortunate as Maggie.

Maggie’s story in her own words:
“I was diagnosed with epilepsy two years ago and it has changed my life. This has affected me in so many ways. Learning is a big one because it is harder to concentrate when you have my form of epilepsy. Also there is worrying. I always worry that I am going to have a seizure when I am at school, playing softball, or just being with my friends.”
-Maggie, age 10

Hugh-a-thon swim-a-thon

Saturday, March 2, 2013

Location:  Westmont High School pool

On Saturday, March 2nd, join us for the Hugh-A-Thon “swim-a-thon” in honor of our friend Hugh who has epilepsy. We are raising money to help find Hugh a cure.

Last year we raised over $6000. That money was sent to CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy). All of the money CURE receives goes to finding a cure for Hugh and others like him. We were lucky enough to attend a dinner last summer where we met doctors our donated money supported. These doctors where working hard to find better medicines for Hugh. We want to keep these doctors working and researching to end epilepsy!

We are hoping to raise $10,000 this year. It will be a lot of hard work, but we think we can do it. We need everyone's help. If you are able to make a pledge and/ or give a donation, we would be very grateful. We plan on swimming 100 lengths of the pool in 30 min. You may pledge as much as you would like per length, or you can just send a donation of any dollar amount you would like.

If you are not able to donate this year, you can still help us out. Last year, our email traveled all the way to California and we had checks coming in from all over the United States. PLEASE pass this email along to anyone you think is interested in helping us help Hugh.

To donate or pledge, please send an email to cvitek9960@ymail.com (yes that is YMAIL). Let us know what you would like to pledge or donate. We will update you on our progress. Checks are to be made out to CURE and sent to:

Jeffrey Vitek
4125 Franklin Ave
Western Springs, IL 60558

You can find us on Facebook and Twitter!

Here is a link to CURE and the speech we presented at the CURE Benefit last summer. This speech explains why we are raising money for Hugh.

Clipper Round the World – Level 2 Training

Friday, March 1, 2013 - Monday, March 11, 2013
North Sea

After his completion of the Level 1 Clipper Training in the South Coast of England, George F. Koether, will participate in Level 2 Clipper Training to prepare for his November 2013 race from South Africa to West Australia (4,700 miles). This training lasts about 10 days with instruction over the North Sea waters. By the week’s end, George and his crewmates will know key racing skills, operating asymmetric spinnakers and boat to boat communication. The main focus of this training is on boat speed. After this training, George will complete the last level of training sometime in June/July 2013. The Clipper Round the World race is a unique global event that takes one full year to complete. Twelve 70’ ocean racing yachts travel a total of 40,000 miles that span across 13 countries. The training and race is part of the two-year Building CURE Globally (BCG) Initiative that aims to raise at least $1 million USD for epilepsy research. Through his efforts and participation, George hopes to build more awareness and open discussion within the sailing community about the disease. His goal is to raise up to $25 USD per mile.

If you would like to pledge per mile and/or donate, please click here. Every dollar counts. All proceeds will benefit CURE.

Building CURE Globally (BCG)

Saturday, October 6, 2012
Through May 2014

Building CURE Globally, "BCG", is a world-wide endeavor to raise awareness and $1,000,000 USD by May 2014 for neurological research in particular for epilepsy. The "BCG" event, Building CURE Globally is an acronym for Jane’s son, Britton Curtis Green, who lives with epilepsy. Britton's "Idiopathic Intractable" diagnosis has inspired their family and friends to do something big to raise awareness and money for research. The first event in this 2 year journey will be Britton's cousin's, Natalie Jane, 3rd annual birthday party in Topeka, KS where her friends donate to CURE rather than bring a birthday present. Another event will be a friend who will be sailing the third leg of the Clipper Around the World race in October 2013. Additional events are in the planning stages around the US and around the world.

Hugh-a-thon

Saturday, February 18, 2012
12:30pm

Please join 6th graders Charlie Mavon & Jeffrey Vitek to raise money to help cure epilepsy for their friend Hugh O’Donnell.

The Hugh-a-thon will be 30 minutes long. Charlie and Jeffrey will alternate swimming 50 yards (2 laps of the pool) and try to swim as many laps as possible. Every five 50 yards, they will also spin the wheel of fun – that 50 will be a fun stroke, like cork screw or dolphin dives. For every lap they swim (25 yards), they ask that you pledge $0.25. The estimated goal is to swim sixty (60) laps – so that ends up about $15. Of course, any amount will be collected, as every cent makes a difference.

Please make checks payable to CURE and send them to:

Jeffrey Vitek
4125 Franklin Ave
Western Springs, IL 60558

For more information, please send an email to Jeffrey Vitek at cvitek9960@ymail.com.
