Our interest in raising funds for epilepsy research started with our daughter Maggie; but ultimately this isn’t about her. Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent, yet underfunded neurological disorders in the United States. Those living with epilepsy deal with varying degrees of significantly life altering symptoms every day. Research has provided some patients and their families with effective medications, nutritional plans, and an enormous amount of hope. We feel lucky enough to be one family who has found a medication that manages symptoms. Our goal, this first year, is to get as many people involved as possible and raise a modest amount of money for CURE. Please help us do this for the countless patients who are not as fortunate as Maggie.
Maggie’s story in her own words:
“I was diagnosed with epilepsy two years ago and it has changed my life. This has affected me in so many ways. Learning is a big one because it is harder to concentrate when you have my form of epilepsy. Also there is worrying. I always worry that I am going to have a seizure when I am at school, playing softball, or just being with my friends.”
-Maggie, age 10

Hugh-a-thon swim-a-thon
Saturday, March 2, 2013
Location: Westmont High School pool
On Saturday, March 2nd, join us for the Hugh-A-Thon “swim-a-thon” in honor of our friend Hugh who has epilepsy. We are raising money to help find Hugh a cure.
Last year we raised over $6000. That money was sent to CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy). All of the money CURE receives goes to finding a cure for Hugh and others like him. We were lucky enough to attend a dinner last summer where we met doctors our donated money supported. These doctors where working hard to find better medicines for Hugh. We want to keep these doctors working and researching to end epilepsy!
We are hoping to raise $10,000 this year. It will be a lot of hard work, but we think we can do it. We need everyone's help. If you are able to make a pledge and/ or give a donation, we would be very grateful. We plan on swimming 100 lengths of the pool in 30 min. You may pledge as much as you would like per length, or you can just send a donation of any dollar amount you would like.
If you are not able to donate this year, you can still help us out. Last year, our email traveled all the way to California and we had checks coming in from all over the United States. PLEASE pass this email along to anyone you think is interested in helping us help Hugh.
To donate or pledge, please send an email to cvitek9960@ymail.com (yes that is YMAIL). Let us know what you would like to pledge or donate. We will update you on our progress. Checks are to be made out to CURE and sent to:
Jeffrey Vitek
4125 Franklin Ave
Western Springs, IL 60558
You can find us on Facebook and Twitter!
Here is a link to CURE and the speech we presented at the CURE Benefit last summer. This speech explains why we are raising money for Hugh.

Clipper Round the World – Level 2 Training
Friday, March 1, 2013
- Monday, March 11, 2013
North Sea
After his completion of the Level 1 Clipper Training in the South Coast of England, George F. Koether, will participate in Level 2 Clipper Training to prepare for his November 2013 race from South Africa to West Australia (4,700 miles). This training lasts about 10 days with instruction over the North Sea waters. By the week’s end, George and his crewmates will know key racing skills, operating asymmetric spinnakers and boat to boat communication. The main focus of this training is on boat speed. After this training, George will complete the last level of training sometime in June/July 2013. The Clipper Round the World race is a unique global event that takes one full year to complete. Twelve 70’ ocean racing yachts travel a total of 40,000 miles that span across 13 countries. The training and race is part of the two-year Building CURE Globally (BCG) Initiative that aims to raise at least $1 million USD for epilepsy research. Through his efforts and participation, George hopes to build more awareness and open discussion within the sailing community about the disease. His goal is to raise up to $25 USD per mile.
If you would like to pledge per mile and/or donate, please click here. Every dollar counts. All proceeds will benefit CURE.

Building CURE Globally (BCG)
Saturday, October 6, 2012
Through May 2014
Building CURE Globally, "BCG", is a world-wide endeavor to raise awareness and $1,000,000 USD by May 2014 for neurological research in particular for epilepsy. The "BCG" event, Building CURE Globally is an acronym for Jane’s son, Britton Curtis Green, who lives with epilepsy. Britton's "Idiopathic Intractable" diagnosis has inspired their family and friends to do something big to raise awareness and money for research. The first event in this 2 year journey will be Britton's cousin's, Natalie Jane, 3rd annual birthday party in Topeka, KS where her friends donate to CURE rather than bring a birthday present. Another event will be a friend who will be sailing the third leg of the Clipper Around the World race in October 2013. Additional events are in the planning stages around the US and around the world.

Hugh-a-thon
Saturday, February 18, 2012
12:30pm
Please join 6th graders Charlie Mavon & Jeffrey Vitek to raise money to help cure epilepsy for their friend Hugh O’Donnell.
The Hugh-a-thon will be 30 minutes long. Charlie and Jeffrey will alternate swimming 50 yards (2 laps of the pool) and try to swim as many laps as possible. Every five 50 yards, they will also spin the wheel of fun – that 50 will be a fun stroke, like cork screw or dolphin dives. For every lap they swim (25 yards), they ask that you pledge $0.25. The estimated goal is to swim sixty (60) laps – so that ends up about $15. Of course, any amount will be collected, as every cent makes a difference.
Please make checks payable to CURE and send them to:
Jeffrey Vitek
4125 Franklin Ave
Western Springs, IL 60558
For more information, please send an email to Jeffrey Vitek at cvitek9960@ymail.com.
